that no one is waiting for that item.

The library will notify you when your requested item is ready for

borrowing items until the balance is less than $5.00. Restricted
patrons are still welcome to use the library facility and all of
its resources.
Registering For a Library Card
We require proof of identity and proof of address.
By signing the borrower's card application, the patron agrees to the
Library lending policies.
Possession of a library card is implied permission
to use that card. That is, if a family member presents another
family member's card, we assume s/he has permission of the card
owner.
For registration of children younger than the 7th
grade, we require a proof of parent's or guardian's identity, and
parents or guardians signature. With this signature the parent
agrees to the responsibility of all fines and replacement costs in
the event the child is not able to meet these responsibilities.
Students who have reached the 7th grade are
eligible for an adult registration. Adult registrations convey that
the card holder is responsible for that card. Proof of
identification is required.
Non-residents may register for a library card at an annual fee of $20 for 1 year or $10 for 3 months,
which may include all family members. The
non-resident card is good for one year from the date of issue.
There is a $1.00 charge to replace a lost card.
First-time borrowers are limited to 5 items on
their first visit. Provided the patron remains in good standing, the
numbers of items borrowed will not be limited on subsequent visits.
Residents
are:
Persons who own property and pay real estate taxes in
Kennebunk, Arundel, Kennebunkport, Wells regardless of
primary domicile; or
Persons who rent residential property in Kennebunk,
Arundel, Kennebunkport, or Wells as their primary
residence. This does not include persons who are seasonal
renters; or
Employees of MSAD #71 or Heartwood College of Art
regardless of residence.
Non-Residents are:
Persons who do not pay real estate taxes in
Kennebunk, Arundel, Kennebunkport, Wells
Persons who rent property on a seasonal basis e.g.
Campground residents or seasonal beach renters.
All applicants must present proof of residency, owning
property/paying taxes, or renters status. Acceptable proof
includes, but is not limited to, a lease, mortgage bill, tax
bill, utility bill mailed to the address used for residency.
Employees of MSAD #71 or Heartwood College of Art who live in
a non-resident town must present documentation of their
employment status. In the case of Heartwood, the college will
send us a yearly faculty list.
The assurance and signature of a parent or guardian will be
accepted as proof of residency for children 6th grade
and under. Non-resident children will be charged the same
non-resident fee as adults.
Family members living in the same residence may elect to
share one card as residents or non-resident (therefore paying
only one fee per family.)
Annual Fee
Beginning October 1, 2003 non-residents will have the option
to purchase a library card membership for 1 year at $20 or 3
months for $10. With the purchase of a library card membership,
patrons will be given all the privileges and responsibilities of
a resident borrowers card.
1-year and 3-months will be calculated as of the date of
registration not a set date. E.G. A patron purchases a card on
8/18/04 it will expire on 8/18/05 or 11/18/04 respectively.
Patrons may not check out materials with an expired
non-resident card.
Interlibrary Loan Policy (ILL)
The Kennebunk Free Library (KFL) offers free Interlibrary
Loan (ILL) service to all library patrons. Patrons can request
materials not owned by the KFL through the ILL service. If the
KFL does not own the requested item, the staff will try to
locate the material through the statewide ILL system.
A search through the ILL system may take a few days to
several weeks, depending on the availability of an item. The
timeframe for receiving material via ILL is generally 7-10 days.
For items that are requested from out-of-state or non-U.S.
libraries, the receipt time may vary.
ILL Policies
- Only one copy of any material may be requested.
- Only books and copies of periodical articles may be
requested via this service, as most libraries only loan books.
In some instances, materials such as microfilm or audiobooks
can be fulfilled, depending on the lending library. The KFL
staff can assist with these requests.
- New books and best sellers are not recommended for ILL, as
they are generally not available. However, the KFL will
consider a request to purchase new books and best sellers.
- The limit for ILL requests is 5 items per person per week.
- Checkout periods for materials obtained through ILL may
vary, depending on the policies of the lending library.
Most materials obtained through ILL are not renewable.
However, in some instances the KFL staff can assist in
extending the loan period. If an extension is needed, the
borrower must contact the KFL staff prior to the due
date.
- Some materials (i.e. rare books, special collections,
etc.) may not be available for ILL.
- Patrons are responsible for the item borrowed.
- If material obtained through ILL is lost, not returned, or
damaged during the lending period, the borrower will be
charged for replacement.
ILL Process
- To request an item via ILL, patrons should fill out the ILL
form available at the Main Circulation desk and return the
form to the library staff.
- A separate form must be completed for each item.
- When requested material arrives at the KFL, the patron
requesting the material will be notified.
Wireless Internet Access at KFL
The Kennebunk Free Library is proud to offer wireless
internet access. This service is available, free of charge, to
any member of the public who brings in their wireless-enabled
laptop computer. Please read the following sections before using KFL's
wireless internet connection. Use of our wireless network
indicates that you have read and agreed to the conditions in
both the Computer Acceptable Use Policy and the Wireless
Internet Confidentiality Disclaimer.
- Many newer laptops come with a built-in wireless adapter.
If you have one of these laptops, your computer will
automatically detect KFLs Internet connection as soon as you
turn it on inside the Library.
- If your laptop doesnt have wireless Internet capability
built in, however, you will need to purchase a wireless card
and install it on your laptop before you can use our internet
connection.
- Once you plug the wireless card into your laptop and
follow the installation instructions on the screen, you are
ready to go! No usernames or passwords required!
- Wireless printing is not available via this service. If
you need to print, please save to a disk or email files to
yourself, then login to a library workstation and send your
print jobs to the printer.
- Please note that due to limited insurance and liability,
the Library staff are unable to assist you with your personal
laptop, card or configurations.
Wireless Internet Confidentiality Disclaimer
KFLs wireless internet service is configured to allow your
computer to automatically detect and use the link without need
for a password or any configuration of your computer.
However, you should be aware that under this arrangement, your
interaction over the wireless network is not encrypted and
could be intercepted by someone using network "sniffer"
software. Avoid entering credit card numbers, passwords or any
other information you consider confidential unless you are
certain that the web site you are interacting with provides
its own security mechanism, such as Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)
encoding. An SSL- protected web page is usually indicated by a
small lock icon display along the lower edge of your browser
window. Use of this wireless connection is entirely at the
risk of the user and the library disclaims all liability for
loss of confidential information or damages resulting from
that loss.

offensive to some people.
All Internet resources available through the library are provided equally to all
